Investment Banking
Investment banking continuously requires a respond to new developments and innovations in the global financial markets. New products with higher margins are constantly invented as trading margins are being pushed down. Potential conflicts of interest may arise between different parts of a bank, creating the potential for financial and market manipulation.
An investment bank is split into front office, middle office, and back office, and its services in the financial markets are split into four key divisions: sales, trading, research, and structuring. Investment banks also work with raising funds in the capital markets as well as in providing strategic advisory services for mergers, acquisitions, and other types of financial transactions.
Generally speaking, investment banks have considerable amounts of in-house and external delivered software. The technology has changed appreciably in the last few years as more sales and trading desks are using electronic trading platforms.
Currently new regulation, such as MiFID, will redefine the investment banking services in Europe as the purpose of MiFID is to create a EU-wide level playing field for investment services.
